by Knox Bardeenknox.email@example.comHOOVER, Ala. South Carolina and Georgia will tangle in Game 2 Friday at the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala. First pitch is scheduled 30 minutes after the completion of the 3 p.m. CT Alabama-Arkansas game and will be broadcast on CSS.
Georgia has been designated as the home team.
The Gamecocks took 2-of-3 from the Bulldogs in March when the teams met in regular-season, conference play.
South Carolina will begin the game with right-handed junior Colby Holmes on the mound. Holmes is 6-2 with a 3.46 ERA this season and won his last start on May 21 against Alabama when he threw 6 23 innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run.
In four May appearances, Holmes has allowed just five earned runs and is 2-1.
Georgia will use lefty Blake Dieterich on the hill. Dieterich is 2-3 this season with a 3.51 ERA in 26 relief appearances and two starts. In his last start, Dieterich gave up seven hits and allowed five earned runs in six innings of work. In his two starts hes 1-0 with a 5.73 ERA and has eight strikeouts in 11 innings.
The winner of Fridays game will move on to play Florida on Saturday in the afternoon game at Regions Park.
The loser Friday will be eliminated from the SEC Tournament. If the Gamecocks lose, theyll head home and await the NCAAs announcement of regional hosting sites for the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
If Georgia loses, its season will be over because its overall record will be 29-30 and the NCAA requires teams that enter the NCAA Tournament to have better than a .500 record.
Georgia needs two more wins to be eligible for an at-large bid into the 2011 NCAA Baseball Tournament.
South Carolina will likely be a regional host in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Baseball Tournament, no matter the outcome of Fridays game.
Georgia has won two of its last three SEC Tournament games against South Carolina. The Bulldogs won in 1993 and 2006, the Gamecocks won in 2002.
