Leslie Koerdt Previews SEC on CSS
"We Back Pat" Week continues in the SEC and on CSS as 9 Tennessee (13-3, 4-0 SEC) travels to Auburn (13-4, 2-2 SEC) for the 9:00 pm ET match up. The teams collide from opposite directions- Tennessee comes off an overtime win over Florida to remain unbeaten in league play, while Auburn loses on the road to Texas A&M dropping the Lady Tigers to 2-2 in the SEC.
Auburn...Not What You Expected...
While Auburn was picked preseason to finish 10th in the SEC, first year coach Terri Williams-Flournoy guided her team to their first win over a ranked opponent in two years beating 23 Arkansas 50-47. The Lady Tigers are lead by the only player in the SEC to score in double figures every game and 19 games straight, Hasina Muhammad. The 6-1 sophomore guard averages 17.0 points per game. Joining Muhammad is veteran Blanche Alverson who surpassed 1,000 points versus Ole Miss. Alverson is also closing in on becoming the 4th AU player ever to tally 1,000 pts, 500 rebs, 100 stls, 100 asst & 50 blks. Facilitating the scoring is Najat Ouardad who ranks 6th in the nation in assists with 7.2 per game and 24th in steals with 3.2 per game.
Tennessee...EXACTLY What You Expected...
The Lady Vols come in as expected with impressive numbers of their own. They enter tonight on a six-game winning streak (defeating Davidson, Rutgers, 1815 South Carolina, 1011 Georgia, Missouri and Florida) with an average margin of victory in four SEC games far is 20.3 points. That number's even more impressive after a three-point overtime win over Florida. Junior guard Meighan Simmons leads UT with 16.6 points per game followed closely by four-time SEC Freshman of the Week Bashaara Graves. Simmons also passed the 1,000 point mark this season versus North Carolina. She also leads the team with 27 steals. Holly Warlick's team has taken their uptempo style to an RPI of 4.
Both teams have been successful this season forcing ooponent turnovers, and while Tennessee is favorite against unranked Auburn, Coach Flo is 1-0 all-time vs. Tennessee. She defeated the Lady Vols while she was at Georgetown, and hopes to do the same her first time on the Auburn sideline.
"We Back Pat"
We Back Pat Week is a week-long initiative focused on bringing awareness and recognition to the Pat Summitt Foundation Fund, a fund of East Tennessee Foundation, and its fight against Alzheimers disease. During the week of January 13-20, SEC member institutions will support the Pat Summitt Foundation Fund during their home basketball games. The Pat Summitt Foundation was launched on Nov. 27, 2011, by Pat Summitt and her son, Tyler, after her diagnosis of early onset dementia, Alzheimers type at the age of 59. CSS will air one more "We Back Pat" game after tonight. You can Tennessee and Alabama Jan. 20 (1 p.m. ET).
