For all you passionate fans, you big-time stats guys, you BTSG's. Here are some notes, nuggets and tidbits of all things College Football.  Impress your friends it's time to kickoff!

I decided to go with a whole special teams theme for this week’s Conference USA article.  I hope you like it or at least think it’s special.

Two weeks for Tulane, as in two weeks in a row for kicker Cairo Santos.  Santos kicked a game-winning field goal as Tulane defeated East Carolina in three overtimes, 36-33.  Not only did Santos kick the game-winner, he tied a school-record by kicking five field goals in a game.  He connected from 42, 28, 42, 43 and 42 yards.  He now has 57 in his career which is nine shy of the career Green Wave mark currently held by Seth Marler.  Here are the three players that have had five field goals in a game for Tulane.

  • Cairo Santos: 2013 vs. East Carolina
  • Brad Palazzo: 1997 vs. Louisville
  • Bart Baldwin: 1994 vs. Rice

Justin Haig kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to lead Marshall to a win over Florida Atlantic. Senior Devon Smith returned a punt 77 yards early in the second quarter for a touchdown.  It was the first punt-return touchdown in his career.  The Penn State transfer is only 5-foot-7 and weighs 150 pounds, but he returns for big yardage.  Since 2000, it was the second-longest punt return by a member of the Thundering Herd.  Here are the top five in that category:

  • Andre Snipes-Booker: 2011 vs. West Virginia - 87 yards
  • Devon Smith: 2013 vs. FAU - 77 yards
  • Chris Royal: 2003 vs. Central Florida - 70 yards
  • Maurice Hines: 2000 vs. Bowling Green - 60 yards
  • Andre Snipes-Booker: 2009 vs. Ohio - 58 yards

Yes, I know that UTEP lost.  They were defeated by Tulsa.  But a certain Miner did something that no other Conference USA player has ever done.  Autrey Golden returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown for the second time this season.  Earlier this season, Golden had one against Texas San-Antonio.  This was also his fourth career kickoff return for a touchdown.   He  became the first UTEP player to accomplish that feat.  He had a 98-yarder against Southern Miss and a 96-yard return against East Carolina last season.  By the way, Autrey is just a sophomore, so if he wants more, he has a golden opportunity.
