Alabama is on a roll now and it has been for a long time. The Crimson Tide improved to 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in conference play as they defeated LSU 38-17 last Saturday night. Senior AJ McCarron was as smooth as ever, throwing for three scores on 14-of-20 passing. He just keeps on winning. The senior now has 34 wins as a starting quarterback which is second all-time in Alabama history. He is one away for tying the record. The Tide still have games against Mississippi State, Chattanooga and Auburn in the regular season plus other games if they advance further. Here are the top five quarterbacks with the most wins at the school (notice no mentions of Bart Starr, Joe Namath or Ken Stabler because they couldn’t play during their freshmen seasons).
- Jay Barker: 35 wins
- AJ McCarron: 34 wins
- Jeff Rutledge: 33 wins
- Harry Gilmer: 30 wins
- Pat Trammell: 26 wins
Aaron Murray threw two touchdown passes in Georgia’s homecoming win over Appalachian State last week and it gave him 115 for his career. That total breaks the all-time SEC career mark previously held by Danny Wuerffel. This was the first time Murray faced the Mountaineers, which means that he has two career touchdown passes against them. Here are the top six teams that Murray has the most career touchdown passes against.
- Against Auburn: 10 touchdown passes
- Against Georgia Tech: 9 touchdown passes
- Against South Carolina: 8 touchdown passes
- Against Florida: 7 touchdown passes
- Against Tennessee: 7 touchdown passes
- Against Vanderbilt: 7 touchdown passes
It was a great win for the Commodores last week as they defeated the Florida in Gainesville for the first time since 1945 and notched the first win against the Gators anywhere since 1988. Head Coach James Franklin may be the new Mr. November in Nashville. The Commodores have now won six straight in the month. Here is a breakdown, by month, for Vanderbilt under their current head coach.
- In August: 0-2
- In September: 7-4
- In October: 5-6
- In November: 7-2
- In December: 1-1
Nick Marshall was running crazy last week in Auburn’s 55-23 shootout win over Tennessee. The Auburn quarterback had 164 yards rushing in the first half alone and finished with a total of 214. Since 2000, that total is the third highest by a quarterback in the SEC. Don’t forget, in recent seasons the conference has produced some gifted running quarterbacks who ended up winning the Heisman, so third place is not too shabby. Here are the top five:
- Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M - 2013 (bowl) vs. Oklahoma: 229 rush yards
- Cam Newton, Auburn - 2010 vs. LSU: 217 rush yards
- Nick Marshall, Auburn - 2013 vs. Tennessee: 214 rush yards
- Cam Newton, Auburn - 2010 vs. Kentucky: 198 rush yards
- Cam Newton, Auburn - 2010 vs. Arkansas: 188 rush yards
