SEC MEDIA DAYS - DAY 1
Florida, Ole Miss, Missouri, South Carolina and most importantly Mike Slive made it to Hoover, Alabama. The Commissioner would not discuss how much longer he would oversee the country’s most powerful football conference. He did, however, put the onus back on the NCAA to regulate concussions in college football and once again propose a cost of full tuition stipend be given to student athletes. Slive was definitely on the attack of the NCAA with his comments especially about letting conferences take care of their own.
FLORIDA HAS ITS SWAGGER BACK
It only took two seasons but the Gators looked and sounded like a team that is ready to win the East in 2013. Will Muschamp opened with a calculated shot at Ohio State by thanking them for their instruction on the NCAA rules. Former Gator coach and current Buckeye coach Urban Meyer turned in a Florida assistant coach for a minor bump violation on the recruiting trail. Muschamp is taking the opportunity to show Meyer that he cannot and should not mess with the Gators.
Jeff Driskel sounded more confident and his body language showed that on Tuesday. Driskel has embraced the leadership role and knows the 2013 team is “his team”. Driskel pointed out that the Gators will take more shots down the field in the passing game and he believes the overall team talent around him his better than last year’s which won 11 games. Florida will run the ball just like last year with sophomore Matt Jones but needs to improve on the league's worst passing game. The first step is Driskel and that seems to be on track.
Jadeveon Clowney, the best defensive player in the country, talked about fear in the eyes of several SEC quarterbacks. However, he did not mention Driskel who he complimented vehemently to me in our interview. “He was my Under Armour All-American quarterback in high school and he can ball”.
