This Friday night our Atlanta Falcons High School Football Friday Night broadcast will feature one of the great stories in the southeast. Have you been paying attention to what has been going on at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia? The Eagles have been quite possibly the hottest team around. You may remember that they shocked top-ranked and previously-unbeaten North Gwinnett a few weeks ago, and they have not slowed down since.
Collins Hill is led by quarterback Tyler Herman. He has already thrown 32 touchdowns this season and seems to be hitting his stride in the playoffs. He put two first half interceptions quickly behind him en route to another blowout win over a quality Alpharetta squad last Friday to set up this week’s quarterfinal matchup against McEachern.
However, the Indians will not be able to key solely on stopping Herman and the passing game because Collins Hill also has a potent rushing attack. As a matter of fact, if you spend any time with Eagles’ coach Kevin Reach one of the first things you will learn is that he takes a lot of pride in the balance his team has struck between the run and the pass. Certainly some of the credit for that balance has to go to running back Tyler Henderson, who is averaging almost eight yards per carry on the season.
The Eagles also have what is quickly becoming one of the best defenses in the state of Georgia as well. One of the names to know on that side of the ball for Collins Hill is linebacker Johnathan Thomas. He has really made a name for himself over the second half of the season, and has now attracted a lot of attention from college recruiters.
Of course, Collins Hill will need Thomas and every other defensive playmaker to be at their best this week if the Eagles are going to stop McEachern. While the Indians may be missing their starting quarterback Ty Clemons, they are still one of the fastest teams in the southeast. And they still have the dynamic duo of running back Taj Griffin and wide receiver T.J. Rahming.
This game is everything you could want from a quarterfinal playoff showdown. Anything could happen in this game, and most likely everything will. So enjoy some turkey with the family on Thursday and then settle in with some leftovers on Friday night. Because I am sure you will agree, there is no better way to spend a Thanksgiving weekend than with some great high school football on CSS.
