We're a week away from the Tennessee Vols season opener against NC State, and today we find out the Vols will be without star WR Da'Rick Rogers in that game against the Wolfpack. In fact the Vols might be without him the entire season...who knows...he's been suspended indefinitely. This is hardly the way Tennessee and Derek Dooley wanted to start what is largely considered a make-or-break season for the Head Coach. Rogers led the SEC in receiving last season and was a pre-season All-SEC first team selection...so yeah...he's kind of valuable. But this no surprise...he was a 5-star prospect coming out of Calhoun, GA HS. It's also no surprise that he's been suspended. He's already been in plenty of trouble in his first two seasons in Knoxville but the red flags were raised long before. Rogers came with that invisible "buyer beware" tag while he was being recruited. I called one of his games his senior year in high school and his talent was immediately evident. In fact you could tell this kid would be an eventual NFL talent. But even then word was, he had one major obstacle to overcome...and that was himself.
Why are we as human's so often self destructive. Rogers has been blessed with so much talent. He's got a chance to have a lucrative career and make more money than the vast majority of us. While this latest episode at Tennessee by no means dooms his future, I think we've also all seen this movie before. Here's hoping that Rogers gets his act together and writes a new script.
