The Memphis East Mustangs are 7-2 on the season (4-0 Division I Class AAA District 16) and coming off a tough 49-48 loss to Craigmont in a game completed Monday after being suspended in the second quarter last Friday night. The Mustangs have already won as many games this season as the last two years combined. Memphis East has one Tennessee state championship coming in 1999. The Mustangs were also state finalist in 2000 and state semi-finalist in 2002. The Mustangs are coached by former East HS star Marcus Wimberly, who went on to a standout career at the University of Miami. He was selected in the 5th round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons and also played for the Philadelphia Eagles. Wimberly is now in his 6th season at East with a record of 31-32, including a 9-3 record in 2008 in which the Mustangs reached the second round of the state playoffs.
Among Memphis East notable football alumni: DT Brandon Ivory, who is currently at Alabama; former Tennessee star DT Dan Williams, who was a first round pick of the Arizona Cardinals; Ole Miss CB Cassius Vaughn of the Denver Broncos; former Tennessee Vols Memphis Tigers OL Malcolm Rawls; and Wimberly.
The Memphis Whitehaven Tigers are 9-0 on the season (4-0 Division I Class AAA District 16) and coming off a 48-0 win vs. Mitchell. Six of Whitehaven's nine wins have been by shutout and the Tigers have allowed only 51 points the entire season. Whitehaven completed one of their best seasons ever in 2010, reaching the state semi-finals for the first time with a 12-2 record. Coached by Rodney Saulsberry, the Tigers have gone 51-9 the last four-plus seasons. Whitehaven was voted the 1963 UPI state champions prior to the start of the playoff era in Tennessee in 1969.
Among Tigers alumni currently playing college football: Arkansas DE Tenarius "Tank" Wright, Safety Gene Robinson of North Carolina, Mississippi State LB Ferlando Bohanna, Colorado LB Derrick Webb, and three members of the Memphis Tigers: WR Marcus Rucker, LB Charles Harris and DT Terry Redden.
