Why did Johnny Manziel leave the Manning Passing Academy early?
The photo of Johnny Football in a bar with AJ McCarron would seem to be evidence that he was indeed out and about the night before and the dehydration story might actually be true. I know none of us here on SEC Tonight have ever had too much to drink but people who have, have told me that too much alcohol can dehydrate you. Of course Manziel might have become dehydrated from working so darn hard in the hot Louisiana sun. But the one issue that I haven't really heard anybody bring up is...if Manziel did indeed party a little too hard, who was serving him. He won't be 21 until this December. The Mannings say Johnny Football wasn't booted but maybe if he was physically unable to perform (for whatever reason) it was perhaps suggested he go home early.
Johnny Football at #SECMediaDays could be a good thing
The Aggies confirmed after this story broke that Manziel will be at SEC Media Days. I think it would be a big mistake to pull him and let him out of this. He needs to face the music. He's done the late night talk shows in the good times, basking in the glory...he's become a mega-media star...to cover for him now that times are not so good would deny him the chance to prove himself as a leader. Instead of looking at the timing of this and SEC Media Days as a disaster...this could be a great opportunity for him to show to everybody that he's a standup guy. If he made a mistake...admit and move on. He'll be much the better for it.
Vandy reveals names of four dismissed players
These losses will no doubt effect depth this season and in regard to the future could have an even greater impact, but in the here and now, the biggest impact is embarrassment for the program. Redshirt Freshman WR Tip McKenzie is one of the four - he caught a 49y TD pass in the Black and Gold game here on CSS and was the top receiver statistically in the spring game. Vandy is deep at WR and he probably wouldn't have played much this season but maybe a lot in the future. That applies for dismissed back-up DBs - CB Brandon Banks and converted WR to Safety Corey Batey - both those guys were considered Top 5 or 6 prospects in the 2012 class. The other dismissed player is JUCO TE Brandon Vandenburg.
Interested to see how Coach James Franklin handles this
The person I'd most like to hear from at #SECMediaDays (and we will on Talkin' Football) is Vandy Coach James Franklin. This is really the first time Coach Franklin has had to deal with an embarrassment of this magnitude. It's all been VanderBuild and Anchor Down. He's sold the program as one that can be successful and do it with integrity and strong academics and now he's facing some of the problems that other programs in the SEC have faced. To this point, there's only been printed statements about this. Now he'll be questioned about it. It'll be interesting to see how he answers. I bet he handles it well.
Best and worse SEC Media Day Interviews
The best interviews are usually the QBs. Over the years...Peyton and Eli Manning...Tim Tebow...currently Aaron Murray...these guys are great. They understand how this works. Play the game to your advantage. The worse interview quite possibily could have been Tennessee QB Tyler Bray last year. You expect a QB to be able to handle interviews, answer fairly simple, straight forward questions. To be the team leader. We're not splitting the atom...it's SEC Media Days. If nothing else spout football cliches and bromides about the game. Bray didn't even do that. So if he conducted himself in interviews with NFL personnel in the same way, I am not surprised he went from a sure-fire, no-less than 3rd round pick, to undrafted this past April.
