Get great players.
I've talked to a lot of coaches in my career, across the spectrum of a lot of sports. When I ask them what the key to success has been, the universal answer is great players.
This is perhaps the easiest explanation as to why the Southeastern Conference is great in football and not so great in men's basketball. A check of the 247 Sports team recruiting rankings over the last three years revealed the following: In football there have been seven different teams, on 12 different occasions to achieve a top 10 ranking. In basketball... only three.
In football, Alabama has had the top-ranked recruiting class the last three years, Florida has had two top-five classes, LSU and Georgia two top-10s. Ole Miss, Auburn and Texas A&M one each. In basketball, Kentucky has been ranked No. 1 twice and second once. But out of the other 13 SEC teams, only LSU and Arkansas have even cracked the top 10 once in the last three years.
Recruiting great players won't guarantee a championship, but I am convinced your team won't win one without them.
