HOOVER, Ala. -- South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney made news on Tuesday at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala. even before he or the Gamecocks' entourage arrived at the Winfrey Hotel.
Clowney's teammate, running back Mike Davis, tweeted (the tweet has since been removed) that Clowney ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash. That's a good time for a wide receiver, but an absolutely sickeningly fast showing (if true) for the 6-foot-6, 274-pound defensive end.
Clowney registered 13 sacks last season as a sophomore and 23.5 tackles for loss. He enters the 2013 college football season as a Heisman Trophy hopeful and the likely first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
He's also the talk of the town in Hoover as Clowney's name has been brought up at just about every turn.
Florida Gators head coach Will Muschamp jokingly said he's hoping not to face Clowney this season. "I'd like to see him come out early… before our game," said Muschamp. "He's a guy you'd better account for on every snap."
Gators offensive guard Jon Halapio told a group of assembled reporters that Clowney could definitely win the Heisman and said "You should play against him, you'll feel the same way."
There seems to be no end to the hype machine that is Jadeveon Clowney. And unlike most cases of obscene gushing over a talented college athlete well before the season starts, Clowney deserves all the respect and accolades.
