The Louisiana State Tigers landed seven first-place votes in Monday’s USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll. LSU leads seven Southeastern Conference teams that also occupy spots in the rankings.
LSU (30-2, 11-1 SEC) won all four of its games last week and trounced then No. 9 Kentucky three times over the weekend by a combined score of 31-6. The Tigers have won 12 straight games and their last nine SEC contests.
The Tigers hit .406 (41-for-101) in the Kentucky series with 12 doubles, three triples and one homer, while the LSU pitching staff limited the Wildcats to a .194 average (18-for-93; 17 singles and one home run).
“I’m very proud of the way our team played all weekend,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “Our players performed with a passion and an intensity that is characteristic of the LSU tradition. This team has great chemistry, they work together extremely well, and they’re willing to do what they have to do to get better as the season progresses.”
Vanderbilt is directly behind LSU at No. 3 in the poll and South Carolina at No. 8 gives the SEC three top 10 teams.
Arkansas is ranked No. 11, Kentucky No. 14, Mississippi State No. 16 and Ole Miss No. 18 to give the SEC seven teams in the top 20.
