The Owls of Florida Atlantic won their first game of the season, defeating in-state foe South Florida in their first ever meeting with the Bulls. FAU had a good mixture of offense and defense in the victory. One of the big plays in the game came when junior cornerback D’Joun Smith returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown. It was the second longest pick-six in Florida Atlantic history. Here are the top five:
- Willie Hughley, 2002 vs. James Madison: 87 yards
- D’Joun Smith, 2013 vs. South Florida: 75 yards
- Willie Hughley, 2003 vs. Northern Colorado: 63 yards
- Willie Hughley, 2003 vs. Northern Arizona: 47 yards
- Adarius Glanton, 2012 vs. Georgia: 42 yards
Chris Boswell did it again. The senior booted another long field goal. This one came with eight minutes left and put Rice up for good in a win over Kansas. Boswell is already the Rice record-holder for most career field goals with 55, and this last one was from 56 yards out. He is an incredible 12-for-17 in his career for field goals 50 yards or more. Here is that breakdown:
- 2010: 2-for-3
- 2011: 3-for-5
- 2012: 6-for-8
- 2013: 1-for-1
Jameill Showers transferred from Texas A&M to UTEP and it has paid off. The junior quarterback had a touchdown pass and a touchdown run in his second consecutive game, and this time it was in a win against New Mexico State. Both scores occurred in the first quarter as Showers found Kevin Perry for a 3-yard strike and a few minutes later ran from 12 yards out. Miner quarterbacks have had a knack for this feat in the past. Here is a list of UTEP players that have had a touchdown pass and run in the same game since 2000, and the number of times they have done it.
- Jordan Palmer: 6 times
- Rocky Perez: 5 times
- Jameill Showers: 2 times
- Omar Duarte: 1 time
- Orlando Cruz: 1 time
- Nick Lamaison: 1 time
- Lorne Sam: 1 time
- Trevor Vittatoe: 1 time
LL Cool J did not want you to call it a comeback. The team from Denton, Texas would disagree. North Texas trailed 20-3 after the first quarter and trailed 27-16 at halftime. The Mean Green fought back and defeated Ball State 34-27. This season, North Texas has dominated second halves of games. In three games so far they have outscored their opponents 46-6 including 22-0 in the third quarter. Unfortunately for them they have been outscored 33- 24 in the first quarter, so comebacks are necessary.
