For all you passionate fans, you big-time stats guys, you BTSG's. Here are some notes, nuggets and tidbits of all things College Football.  Impress your friends it's time to kickoff!

Sophomore running back Kenneth Dixon ran wild in a Bulldog win over the UTEP Miners.  Dixon toted the rock 25 times for 200 yards rushing.  That number is nothing new.  He ran for 232 as a freshman last season against Idaho.  Since 2000, a Louisiana Tech player has rushed for 200 yards in a game at least once in a season.  Two of the players did it more than once.  Here are the players and the number of times they have reached the two-century mark.

  • Ryan Moats: 7 times
  • Kenneth Dixon: 2 times
  • Lennon Creer: 1 time
  • Tevin King: 1 time

Shane Carden likes to throw a lot.  Carden let it rip for East Carolina in its win over Middle Tennessee.  Carden threw a career-high 57 passes, completing 43 of them.  More important, he also had zero interceptions.  It was the second time this season he has at least 50 pass attempts and zero interceptions in the same game.  The other game was against Old Dominion.  Three quarterbacks have done this twice this season.  Here are those three:

  • Shane Carden: East Carolina
  • Cody Fajardo: Nevada
  • Garrett Gilbert: SMU

Tulane won its 500th game all-time with a win over North Texas.  The Green Wave is off to a 4-2 start this season and 2-0 in Conference USA play.  They have looked good throwing the ball and running it, but the part I am most impressed with lately is their run defense.  In their last two games combined, Tulane has allowed 60 yards rushing and zero touchdowns on the ground.  The opponents are averaging 1.4 yards per attempt in the last two games as well.  For the season, they are allowing just under 112 yards rushing per game and 3.6 yards per attempt.  Last season they allowed just less than 223 yards rushing per game and 5.1 yards per attempt.

FIU is still a very young program and this season it has shown.  In their first four games they were winless and scored a total of 23 points.  This past week they scored 24 and got a win over Southern Miss.  Golden Panthers defensive tackle Isame Faciane blocked a field goal as time expired in the victory.  I am sorry I don’t have stats on FIU blocked field goals, so I am going to take the easy way out.  Freshman running back Silas Spearman rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns.  The 136 yards were the most by a FIU true freshman since 2010.  He also had 29 rushing attempts in the game.  That total was tied for fifth in most carries by a Golden Panther in the game.  Of those six leaders, Spearman was the only one that was a freshman.  Here is that list:

  • Rashod Smith: 2004 vs. Stephen F. Austin - 37 attempts
  • Ben West: 2005 vs. Florida A&M - 34 attempts
  • Kendrick Rhodes: 2011 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette - 30 attempts
  • Kendrick Rhodes: 2011 vs. Troy - 30 attempts
  • Rashod Smith: 2004 vs. Western Kentucky - 29 attempts
  • Silas Spearman: 2013 vs. Southern Miss - 29 attempts
