The Thanksgiving holiday is upon us and games will be played as teams from around the nation look to stake a claim in their respective conferences. We'll begin with games that you'll see right here on CSS followed by a quick visit thru Conference USA.
Most will have a had a second helping of turkey and dressing when Appalachian State tips off against Georgia in Athens at 5 p.m. ET on CSS on Friday. Both teams are looking for wins, the Appalachian State Mountaineers under former North Carolina star Jason Capel and the Georgia Bulldogs under fourth-year head coach Mark Fox are 1-4.
Conference USA and the Sunbelt Conference will mix it up at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday as Kermit Davis Jr. and his 5-1 Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will host South Alabama. First-year head coach Matthew Graves and his Jaguars are 4-2 in the young season.
Georgia will make a second appearance on CSS Monday, Dec. 2. Will Wade and the 2-4 Chattanooga Mocs come to town. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
Meanwhile, Conference USA has plenty to brag about as Alan Major and the Charlotte 49ers won the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Championship with a stunning 63-61 victory over John Beilein and his No.16 Michigan Wolverines. Heading into the tournament Charlotte and Michigan both sported a 2-1 records.
The team currently playing the best basketball in Conference USA is Southern Miss. Donnie Tyndall's Golden Eagles are undefeated at 6-0. The last contest for Southern Miss saw the Golden Eagles come away with a 99-54 win over William Carey on Nov. 24. Next up for the Golden Eagles is a trip to Louisville for a Friday 7 p.m. ET tipoff against Hall of Fame Coach Rick Pitino and the No. 9 Louisville Cardinals.
Also playing well are the Pirates of East Carolina, a new conference member, as well as Louisiana Tech who both have just one loss. Old Dominion and Tulane each took losses this week to fall to 4-2 and Florida International is holding its own at 6-3. East Carolina will host UNC Wilmington on Dec. 1 while Old Dominion plays visitor in Cancun, Mexico. Tulane takes on Texas State in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Louisiana Tech is attempting to make waves at the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Floria.
North Texas is 4-3 and UAB is 4-2 while Marshall and UTEP are two-loss teams, the Thundering Herd at 4-2 and Miners at 3-2. UTEP has a chance to better their record while enjoying some really good weather. The Miners will take on Tennessee Thanksgiving Day in the Battle for Atlantis while in Paradise Island, Bahamas. Safe to say, it's all about scheduling.
STILL GETTING WARMED UP
Looking to hit their stride is Rice at 2-3, UTSA 1-5, Florida Atlantic at 1-6, and Tulsa, who is winless at 0-4. Next up for Ben Braun and Rice is Rider on Friday for the Cable Car Classic in beautiful Santa Clara, California. UTSA has a date with Texas Tech on Friday in Lubbock.
FAU will face Central Florida Dec. 3. Tulsa is set for a Wednesday tipoff against Indiana State in the Great Alaskan Shootout in Anchorage.
