WELCOME TO BOB'S BLOG!!!
Welcome to Bob's Blog. The countdown to college football’s first big Saturday continues. 6 Blogs and counting. Today, the first Heisman watch for the South’s 7 best players:
7. Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State: Last year he shocked the football world by leading the Mountaineers to a win over Michigan on opening day, then went on to guide App State to Div 1 double A championship. This year, the mountain is even higher as their opening game is at Death Valley in Baton Rouge…Edwards is a long shot…but after LSU on August 30th his Heisman train may be comin around the mountain.
6. Percy Harvin, Florida. Harvin had 1600 yards running and receiving last year. But with the addition of help in the backfield, Harvin could have a better year…but with less numbers. Look for Percy to catch a lot of screens and a few deep balls.
5. Matthew Stafford, Georgia. Stafford got better and better as the season progressed last year, spent the summer working on fundamentals, hoping to raise his completion percentage to 62. That’s Coach Mark Richt’s standard for QB’s. Stafford has his talented receivers returning, an excellent offensive line and the Quarterback’s best friend…an explosive running game. If Stafford manages the 8 returning starters, avoids mistakes and hit’s on the long ball…he’ll be right there at the end.
4. Cullen Harper, Clemson. Coming off a Tiger record 27 TD passes last year, Harper has talented receiver Aaron Kelly back after the 6-5 pass catcher changed his mind about going to the NFL…James Davis also is returning along with CJ Spiller. That’s a ton of talent for Harper to lead, but Clemson has a rebuilding young offensive line. If Harper continues his growth as a leader, uses thunder and lightening wisely…He could win the ACC and the Heisman.
3. Pat White, West Virginia. White is the nation’s premiere spread option QB. Last season he ran for 14 TD’s and threw for 14. White already holds the Big East career record for quarterback careeer rushing at 35 hundred yards and could add another thousand to that. White health is critical for West Virginia. The Mountaineers lost the only two games he missed last year.
2. Tim Tebow, Florida. He is the returning Heisman winner, but it’s always tough to repeat. Voters like to find the new best thing. This will also be a year growth for Tebow. He has two excellent running backs so he won’t have to be the team’s leading rusher and Percy Harvin is going to get open more often due to all the offensive weapons. So, the Gators could have a return to top national rankings and Tebow’s game could be better, but his number might be down and back to back Heismans are always a long shot.
And…the Number one Southern Football Heisman Candidate: Knowshon Moreno, Georgia. He was below the radar the first half of last year and now, Moreno will share duties with Caleb King. But make to mistake about it….When the game is on the line, Knowshon MO shon Moreno will get the ball and the first down…I like Moreno for the Heisman because of his unbreakable attitude. He pops up after tackles like the late Walter Payton and never met a safety he didn’t like leveling.
So, now there are only 5 blogs till the season starts. Next week, I’ll break down the ACC Atlantic Division. Remember I’m also blogging on line and would love to get your emails at bobsblog@css-sports.com And of course, I can’t wait to hear the SportsNite panel of judges rate my Top Seven Southern Heisman candidates. Let’s go back to Randy, Paula and Simon.
