For all you passionate fans, you big-time stats guys, you BTSG's. Here are some notes, nuggets and tidbits of all things college basketball. Impress your friends it's time to tip off!

SYRACUSE

What more can you say about Tyler Ennis?  The Orange is full of stars, but it was the super frosh who got the ball in the closing seconds a made a 35-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead Syracuse to a 58-56 win over Pittsburgh.  With the victory, Syracuse remains undefeated at 24-0 and 11-0 in the ACC.  It was Ennis’s only three-pointer of the game.  He finished with 13 points and five assists.  College Basketball has so many talented freshmen, but I decided to see where Syracuse’s point guard ranks among all the first-year players in college basketball.

  • Points Per Game: 11.7 (NCAA Rank – 47th)
  • Total Assists: 135 (NCAA Rank – 4th)
  • Total Steals: 51 (NCAA Rank – 1st)

GEORGIA TECH

Syracuse isn’t the only team that can hit a three at the end.  Georgia Tech’s Marcus Georges-Hunt connected on a 3-point field goal with 0.7 seconds left and the Yellow Jackets defeated the Boston College Eagles 74-71 in a game that was postponed from the day before due to poor weather.  Also like Ennis above, that was also Georges-Hunt’s only three pointer of the game.  He was tied for 2nd on the team in scoring that game with 15 and is averaging 12.3 points per game for the season.  Georgia Tech seems to play well when Marcus Georges-Hunt plays well and when he doesn’t the Yellow Jackets generally get stung.  Check out these stats.

  • In 13 wins – 13.5 points per game, 46.8 field goal pct, 1.1 turnovers per game
  • In 12 losses – 10.9 points per game, 35.6 field goal pct, 2.4 turnovers per game

NORTH CAROLINA STATE

T.J. Warren scored 23 of his career-high 34 points in the first half as North Carolina State defeated Wake Forest 82-67.  Warren has six career 30-point games and five this season.  The sophomore connected on 15-26 field goals.  Both the made field goals and attempts were career-highs as well.  He also added ten rebounds in the game.  He is one of four players this season in college basketball that have had at least 30 points in a game with at least 10 rebounds twice.  He did his against Eastern Kentucky and Wake Forest.  Here are those four players.

  • T.J. Warren: North Carolina State
  • Dylon Cormier: Loyola- Maryland
  • Z. Mason: Chattanooga (his real name is Zaccheus, but prefers Z.)
  • Doug McDermott – Creighton

NOTRE DAME

The Fighting Irish led and led but Clemson kept fighting back, but Notre Dame took the lead for good in an extra session as they defeated the Tigers in overtime 68-64.  Four Irish players scored in double figures to lead the balanced attack.  Notre Dame has played their share of overtime games throughout the years.  They are 9-1 in their last ten overtime games.  The last time they did not play an overtime game during the season was during the 2006-07 campaign.  Here is how they have done in extra play since then.

  • 2013-14: 3-0 (longest 2ot)
  • 2012-13: 3-1 (longest 5ot)
  • 2011-12: 3-0 (longest 2ot)
  • 2010-11: 2-1 (longest 2ot)
  • 2009-10: 1-1 (longest 2ot)
  • 2008-09: 0-1 (longest 1ot)
  • 2007-08: 1-0 (longest 1ot)

The Duke/North Carolina tilt was scheduled for Wednesday but was also postponed due to bad weather and the game will now be played on Thursday, February 20th at 9:00 pm eastern.
